It had been four days since Teo, Alex and I had climbed Huayna Potosí. Now I was back in the mountains, and I hoped to get a decent nighttime shot. After thirty seconds there was another click as the camera closed. I picked up my camera from the pile of rocks I had set it on and looked at the LCD screen. It showed a picture of the Condoriri mountain group, named after the Andean condor (kuntur, in the Quechua language). This species of vulture is one of the largest flying birds in the world, with a maximum wingspan of over ten feet. The trio of mountains that made up Condoriri really looked like a condor, ready to take flight. Cabeza del Condor (Head of the Condor) was in the center, covered in a white glacier. The wings, and their pointy shoulder blades, were propped up on either side. The stars were what really struck me about the photo. They looked like snowflakes, trickling from the heavens onto the iconic bird. "Good job," Alex said when I showed him the photo. "Thanks," I said. "Are you sure about staying behind?" "I would love to come, but I wouldn't make it far." Alex had gotten sick the previous day. He still wasn't looking well. "I think you'll easily reach the summit." "We'll see," I said, glancing up at the mountain. It looked formidable, and I wasn't so confident in my abilities. "Good luck," he said, returning to the tent. I thought about curling up in my sleeping bag for a night of slumber. I quickly pushed the idea out of my mind and returned to the task at hand. It was an easy decision, trading a good night's sleep to climb a mountain.
